The Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences (VBS) Department in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) at South Dakota State University (SDSU) is offering an exciting career opportunity in a tenure-track faculty position in Veterinary Infectious Disease. We are looking for a creative and innovative professional with understanding of food animal agriculture and expertise in veterinary microbiology / immunology to explore innovative processes and develop cutting-edge tools that will enhance and strengthen the health of food animal agriculture. The ideal candidate will develop and maintain an extramurally-funded research program, train the next generation of veterinary scientists and food animal veterinarians, and contribute to the diagnostic mission of the department.

The VBS Department has a long history of national recognition for research in veterinary infectious disease, which is fully supported by newly renovated and well-equipped laboratory spaces. Equipment and expertise within the department currently support a wide range of infectious disease research activities and include next-generation sequencing capabilities, immunophenotyping and BSL-3 facilities. Access to on-campus supercomputing is also available.

The South Dakota Animal Disease Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL) is housed within the VBS Department. The ADRDL is an accredited, full-service veterinary diagnostic laboratory that serves the needs of veterinarians, animal agriculture, wildlife agencies and pet owners nationwide. Based on qualifications, this position may acquire section leader responsibilities within the ADRDL.

The Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine (PPVM) is another important facet of the VBS Department. The PPVM is a cooperative program with the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine (UMN CVM) and encompasses the first two years of the professional veterinary curriculum. Students complete 2 years of their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree education at SDSU, and then finish their final two years at the UMN CVM. This position will support teaching in the PPVM with the area of focus based on qualifications and interest.

This is a 12-month, full time, benefit eligible, tenure-track faculty position. Documented qualifications and experience will determine appointment rank. This position is supervised by the VBS Department Head.

This position will also contribute to instructing and/or training undergraduate, graduate and/or professional students, along with post-doctoral scientists and laboratory staff. Additionally, contributions to the diagnostic mission of the ADRDL is also expected.
